As we continue to roll through September – we continue to share stories of children battling cancer. The stories are incredibly sad, heart breaking and unfair. But, it is necessary to continue to share them; to shine a light on them – if we want to see any change. September is Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month and we are going gold for children who deserve much more than just 4% of funding devoted to finding better treatments for them.
Today, we are sharing Carson’s story.
Jeff and Kelly Barnhart had no idea how much their lives would forever change on July 23, 2018. Their beautiful, seemingly healthy 5-month-old baby boy woke up from his nap feeling very irritable and vomiting.
Just two days later, after a battery of tests, baby Carson was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Surgeons removed the tumor days later. Family members say he was looking amazing and recovering well. There was every reason to stay optimistic.
Carson’s Aunt, Lori Barnhart explains how things changed quickly, “Unfortunately we were very wrong, on August 1st we heard the devastating news, the pathology results came back as congenital glioblastoma, this type of brain tumor is aggressive and malignant.”
That meant Carson would need to begin chemotherapy. The past few months have been extremely rough on this family and they have a long road ahead.
Loved ones are hopeful to raise enough money so Jeff and Kelly can spend their energy on their baby and not worry about the financial strain that comes with having a sick child. Lori Barnhart is hopeful and thankful for the community, “Carson is going to be fighting a battle for his life and I’m asking for your support, there is no amount too small or too large and any amount will be helpful and appreciated to alleviate their worries. Kelly will be out of work during this time for the treatment of Carson. I just want them to focus on their son’s health and not worry about anything else at this time.”
Lori has started a Gofundme page – here is the link – https://www.gofundme.com/help-for-carson

**As we think about this adorable little baby, it is incredibly important to spread the word – for Carson and all of the other children battling cancer and those we’ve lost to the disease – that 4% is unacceptable. Only 4% of funding raised goes to research pediatric cancer. These children deserve so much more. Contact your lawmakers and demand change.
