It’s been nearly six years since 18-year-old Alix Rice was killed, hit by a drunk driver while riding her longboard. Friends and family remember Alix as a sweet, kind, caring person who always went above and beyond for everyone. She loved riding that board. And, her family has worked hard to keep her memory alive through the idea, the concept of the Alix Rice Peace Park – Skate Park. Now, finally – the groundbreaking is in sight said Jon Fulcher, President of the Alix Rice Peace Park Foundation, “We are hopeful the park will be opened in the summer of this year. We hope to hold a grand opening and are hopeful that we can hold the first set of competitions that day.”
It’s been a long process, but once open, the new skate park near the University at Buffalo North Campus will offer unlimited fun – but, it’s more than that says Fulcher, “This park will hopefully teach young kids the dangers of drinking and driving and will have a lasting impact in the community. She enjoyed life and it is our hope that this park creates a place that kids and amateurs can have an amazing time without the dangers of road traffic. This facility will be the first of its kind in Amherst.”
Members of the foundation plan to unveil their final design for the 10,000-square-foot skate park, – which will be built on town-owned land near the Northtown Center – at the fundraiser March 26. For everyone who loved Alix – this has been a very long road, but now – says Fulcher, the attention will be right where it should be, “This facilities first priority is to remember Alix Rice and her kind and caring ways. It also is a way to give to the community a place to practice the sport she loved so dear. I think it is the perfect way to remember a fun loving girl that went out of her way for everyone she met and it will again be a way to give to the local area a free use facility for generations of kids and amateurs.”
