Officials with the Buffalo Police Department vowed to find their man. And they did. Buffalo Police Lieutenant, Jeff Rinaldo confirmed that on this fifth day of searching, the body of Officer Craig Lehner has been located in a sweep just a short time ago. A fifth day of searching began around 9:40 this morning. It has been a long few days for those first responders as they’ve searched for the 34-year-old K9 officer who is remembered as a good man and a good friend.

Mayor Brown has issued a statement offering condolences

And the top of Buffalo City Hall will remain blue in honor of Officer Lehner.

Lt. Rinaldo vowed to continue the search – as long as it took in order to bring closure to his family.

Jim Martina is a friend of Officer Lehner and says he is a kind and caring friend and police officer and is a true inspiration.

Looking at this photo  Martina’s heart breaks, “What an appropriate photo with Shield his friend and partner. These two shared such love for each other – loved watching them. Lord if there is any hope how to find Craig alive please guide these skilled officers.”

Officer Lehner was participating in a routine training session Friday afternoon when he went missing in the Niagara River.

Lehner, a part of a 14-member Underwater Recovery team is also a K-9 officer.

Officer Lehner, 34, joined the police force in 2008. His primary duty is with the K-9 unit; partnered with a German Shepherd named Shield.

They practice these underwater missions so they are prepared for an emergency. They do it so they can save lives. Officer Lehner is a hero – and we are sending thoughts and prayers to his family, friends, and fellow officers.
