Erie County Executive, Mark Poloncarz announced that while other areas of the country are seeing an increase, Erie County is seeing a decrease in opioid overdose fatalities in our community.
The county’s confirmed data from 2017 for opioid related deaths show this is a county wide issue, and that fentanyl is still the leading opioid accounting for about half of deaths. Poloncarz says they are projecting a 10% decrease in deaths this year.
Poloncarz says the decrease is thanks to a community-wide effort, including those who make up the Erie County Opioid Task Force.
Help is available if you need it. The 24 Hour Hotline is 716-831-7007. The county will also be rolling out billboards in an effort to increase awareness and help continue this trend of decreases.
There is obviously a lot of work to be done, but this is certainly a good start.
