Jim Kelly will be honored at the ESPY Awards tonight. Kelly will receive the Jimmy V Award during the ceremony, which airs live on ABC at 8 p.m. Kelly is the 12th recipient of the award.
The Jimmy V Award (sometimes called the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance) is awarded as part of the ESPY Awards to “a deserving member of the sporting world who has overcome great obstacles through perseverance and determination”.
Previous winners include Stuart Scott and Devon Stills and his daughter, Leah.
Kelly was diagnosed with oral squamous-cell carcinoma in May 2013. He had been cancer-free since September 2014. A biopsy in February revealed the cancer has returned.
He had major surgery in March where doctors worked to remove the cancer and reconstruct much of Kelly’s upper jaw which he has revealed has caused him massive amounts of pain every day. He then had a follow up surgery in June. Both surgeries were said to be successful.
