It’s the 50th Anniversary of the iconic rock opera and in this “Jesus Christ Superstar,” you can’t look away.

Even if you want to.

Featuring award-winning music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, “Jesus Christ Superstar” is a rock musical set against the backdrop of a series of events during the final weeks in the life of Jesus Christ, as seen through the eyes of his betrayer, Judas.

The 50th anniversary tour show, which opened Tuesday as part of the Shea’s 2019-20 season, was nothing short of spectacular. The set and costumes were simple.   And the story, timeless – although – at times, difficult to watch.

Aaron LaVigne, who plays Jesus, was sensational. He kept me captivated during his entire journey – from working miracles to the last supper to his crucifixion – his performance was raw and emotional.

The entire ensemble was heavenly – the music, the choreography – stunning.

I have to say – Jenna Rubaii, who plays Mary Magdalene, was my absolute favorite. She almost brought me – (and the house) to tears with her emotional, power-packed rendition of “I Don’t Know How to Love Him”. Her voice is soulful and beautiful, but it was more than that – just the way she looked at Jesus – was captivating – you couldn’t help but be drawn in – it was simply spectacular.

At times, it was incredibly intense and graphic. And there were moments – the house was so quiet – you could of heard a pin drop.

It is also worth mentioning that this production of “Jesus Christ Superstar” runs 90 minutes straight through with no intermission. This kept the energy flowing and allowed the emotional to continue to build. And boy did it build. At times, this show was so intense I thought I might jump out of my seat.

The concert atmosphere had actors using hand-held or standing microphones, playing guitar and rocking out big time.

It’s moving, inspiring and unforgettable. Knowing the subject matter and the ending – you can imagine how tough some of the scenes are to watch. Still, you can’t look away.
