Wrenn is an adorable puppy that could be the difference between life and death.

Allison is an insulin dependent, Type 1 Diabetic who is  in the process of getting a Diabetic Alert Dog (DAD) to help her with her dangerous high and low blood sugar levels.  Her dog, Wrenn, is currently in training with a company called Diabetic Alert Dogs of America. This company specializes in training these amazing dogs- who can smell the chemical emitted by her body when her blood sugar is out of range. When the dog smells that her sugar is out of range, he is trained to “alert” her by pawing at her arm gently to alert her that she is trending into a danger zone with her sugar level and that she should immediately stop and test her sugar.

Once she confirms that her level is out of range, she can take the necessary steps of treating with insulin or sugar before the symptoms get too severe.

A sugar level that is too high can cause extreme thirst, frequent urination, blurred vision, headaches, difficulty concentrating, exhaustion, restlessness and  irritability.
A sugar level that is too low can cause shakiness, confusion, sweating, slurred speach, emotional instability (anger and crying), naesea and siezures.
If untreated, both highs and lows can lead to siezures, stroke, coma or death. Long term fluctations in the levels can lead to vision loss, nerve damage, kidney failure, etc.

A fundraiser called Raise the Ruff for Allison Schukraft will be held on February 18th from 1-5 p.m.

Proceeds from the event will aid the cost of acquiring a Diabetic Assistance Dog (DAD) for Allison.

BBQ dinner, basket auction, live DJ, and games. Fun for the whole family.

About Me

Welcome to Totally Buffalo! A local lifestyle website.

My name is Mary Friona-Celani and I am the creator of this site! I’m a wife, a mom, a grandma, a Buffalo booster, an entrepreneur and a small business owner. I’m so glad you stopped by.  After 20 years in the buffalo media, I went out on my own to tell stories about the people, places, events and all-around fabulousness of this wonderful place we call home. Buffalo is different and so is this site. We are here to share stories, encourage kindness, and help make this a better place to live.

We’ll help those in need when we can through our charity arm, Totally Buffalo Cares.

We help local small businesses, artisans and vendors though our events and our Totally Buffalo Stores.

We’ll do all of this with a little help from friends in our community.
