I mean come on… who doesn’t love sponge candy!
Sponge Candy is a favorite of Buffalonians. Travel the country and ask for sponge candy and most folks will not have a clue what you’re talking about.
It is in the same genre as toffee and can be found anywhere from Great Britain to Scotland to New Zealand, but in America, the main distributors are in Buffalo, Michigan and other locations around Lake Erie.
There are a bunch of places that sell the sweet treat – here’s out top five.
- Platter’s Chocolates, 908 Niagara Falls Blvd., North Tonawanda – If you ask the folks at Platters, they’ll tell you it was their invention, “In 1938, Carl Platter started a chocolate tradition in the basement of his home right over the Erie County border in North Tonawanda. Today they are located in the historical Wurlitzer Building where locals and tourist alike come year round to visit the “Platter’s Chocolate Factory” and watch production from many public-viewing areas.”
- Fowler’s Chocolates, (Locations in East Aurora, Hamburg, Buffalo, Cheektowaga, Tonawanda and more.) Fowler’s call themselves the original and authentic sponge candy maker. The story of Fowler’s Chocolate Shoppe, Inc. began in 1901 with a young entrepreneur by the name of Joseph A. Fowler. After living in England and Canada, Joseph traveled to Buffalo, NY in order to attend the Pan American Exposition. At the exposition, he created and sold a small variety of chocolate confections and sweets.
- Park Edge Sweet Shoppe, 325 Abbott Rd, Buffalo- for some of their famous sponge candy! Since 1948, Western New Yorkers have ventured to South Buffalo for the freshly made sponge candy sticks of Park Edge Sweet Shoppe.
- Watson’s Chocolates has locations in Kenmore, Amherst, Buffalo, Orchard Park and more. In 1946, two brothers, Louis and John Watson, and their respective wives, Ellen and Mary, began making chocolates in the back room of their soda fountain and luncheonette on Delaware Avenue in Kenmore, NY.
- Alethea’s Chocolates, 8301 Main Street, Williamsville -Alethea’s has a long history in the confectionary business, starting with the owner’s Great Grandmother Alethea, who made confections in her hometown of Kozani Greece. Before the family business became known as Alethea’s, it was the Garden of Sweets located on Bailey Ave. in Buffalo, and was very popular for fine chocolates and home made ice cream throughout the area. In 1979, the Tassy Family, decided to consolidate their store and factory into one location. They purchased a historic estate in Williamsville, and built a new Chocolate Factory adjacent to the original estate home
