Twelve-year-old Lewiston boy raises money and delivers food to healthcare workers, first responders and to those in need!

It all started with a note.

Twelve-year-old Matthew just wanted to help others. “I want to donate my money.” he wrote in a note to his mom. He wanted to give his $83 to hospitals or doctors and to help feed those in need.

It was an amazing note. So Kristen Olszewski did what any proud mama would do – she posted her pride on Facebook. What happened next was incredible! That $83 turned into $1,000 in just a few days.

So the Lewport middle schooler made the rounds. The boy that would normally be in school and playing hockey for the Niagara University Purple Eagles modified team – was instead out on the town giving back to the community. His mom – bursting with pride. “He has always had a big heart and happy to help anyone he could but giving back to the community like this has been new for him,” Kristen Olszewski told me,”It was such a learning moment when we dropped off food to the community missions in Niagara Falls. Seeing first hand the people in need, and seeing how nice they were and grateful. They weren’t just “scary people in the streets” they are real people just like him!”

Matthew brought food to the Community Mission in Niagara Falls as well as two other food drives. He brought Tim Horton’s coffee and breakfast to the Lewiston Police Department, State Trooper Barracks, Summit Pediatrics, Wheatfield Pediatrics and Schoellkopf Nursing home.

BUT – this isn’t just a one-off. Oh, no.

More good news. Our friends over at The Village Bake Shoppe have matched Matthew’s $615 donation towards sweets – which means Matthew will be delivering an astounding $1300 worth of desserts next week to healthcare workers and staff at St. Mary’s Hospital!!!

Kristen says this is something that now means the world to her son. “When this is over he plans to keep helping! My friend asked if he’d like to help in the soup kitchen with her, before this he probably wouldn’t have been “excited” or as willing! He is a big brother to 2 toddler girls and goodness if he isn’t going to be an amazing father when he is older! Such patience and love for them!” And a great role model, too!

Way to go, Matthew! We are so proud of you and we can’t wait to see all of the wonderful things you do in the future!

About Me

Welcome to Totally Buffalo! A local lifestyle website.

My name is Mary Friona-Celani and I am the creator of this site! I’m a wife, a mom, a grandma, a Buffalo booster, an entrepreneur and a small business owner. I’m so glad you stopped by.  After 20 years in the buffalo media, I went out on my own to tell stories about the people, places, events and all-around fabulousness of this wonderful place we call home. Buffalo is different and so is this site. We are here to share stories, encourage kindness, and help make this a better place to live.

We’ll help those in need when we can through our charity arm, Totally Buffalo Cares.

We help local small businesses, artisans and vendors though our events and our Totally Buffalo Stores.

We’ll do all of this with a little help from friends in our community.
