The world they do is amazing. The folks at Senior Wishes work all year round to make wishes come true. They’re working extra hard during the holidays!
Last December, Senior Wishes received a call from a senior care worker inquiring whether her client, Mary, could receive some yarn as she enjoyed knitting for her grandchildren, but the cost of yarn was too expensive. Shortly before Christmas, a basket of yarn along with some puzzles was delivered to Mary, and the non-profit’s first Simple Wish for the Holidays was granted.
This year 61 deserving seniors, many with little or no family, were nominated by agencies who work with seniors to receive much needed gifts such as warm blankets, bathrobes, slippers, winter gear, toiletries and craft supplies.
“It is so heart-warming to witness the joy a senior has when they open their gift and see something that was chosen just for them,” explained Wendy Miller Backman, Senior Wishes Executive Director, “In that moment, they are seen. It’s amazing how much joy a soft blanket or a warm bathrobe can bring to someone.”
Senior Wishes has granted over 130 wishes including travel to reunite family members, trips to cultural and sporting events, celebrations of milestone birthdays and anniversaries and other experiences that were meaningful to a senior.
In addition to individual wishes, group wishes have been granted to several low income senior housing apartments, where residents enjoyed an ice cream social, a picnic dinner provided by Ted’s Food Truck and an outdoor movie night.
Community members can assist the organization by nominating a senior, or making a donation toward a wish granting. Visit www.seniorwishes.org or call Wendy Miller Backman at 716-508-2121.
