There’s not much better than a good hug.
For the past four years, the folks at Comforting Hugs Foundation have basically lived by that motto. They work tirelessly to bring joy and comfort to sick children and their families. It started out as a few ladies bringing small gift bags to children in the hospital. But boy, has it grown.
They give each child a gift bag – with a handmade blanket, pillow case, an age-appropriate toy, and a Tim Horton’s gift card. In the grand scheme of what these families are going through – this may seem like a small gesture – but, it is a big deal. Melinda McMaster is one of the board members of Comforting Hugs – she says it’s an honor to help in any way, “That is why we do it. If you see the look on the child’s face, it’s so amazing. The parents are so appreciative. It’s wonderful.”
Comforting Hugs has also donated fun little cars to Women and Children’s Hospital for kids to ride. This is something that can help make the time in the hospital a littler easier for the little ones.
The organization relies on help from the community. Students help with fundraising and many others make blankets, donate gift cards, money and other products – all adding up to making a difference. To helping these families feel as if they are surrounded by love. It matters. Truly.
As a mom who spent months in the hospital with my daughter, I can personally tell you that anything that takes your mind off of your reality is an enormous gesture. Melinda says she sees it first hand, “If we make them feel better for a minute, an hour, a day, it’s all worth it. If we take their mind off of what they’re going through that is something pretty special. These people are in the battle of their life.”
Comforting Hugs also partners up with other charities. In fact, they are sponsoring the 50th bedroom makeover for Special Spaces Buffalo. Lauryn Laskowski is 13-years-old and is suffering from ovarian cancer – and she will be getting a brand new space that is sure to bring her comfort, peace and joy.
It’s another reason to be proud to live in such a caring and wonderful place! This is #TotallyBuffalo.
Comforting Hugs Foundation is always looking for help – for donors and for volunteers. If you would like to help, you can contact them on their website.
