This is just horrific news.
The Grand Island community is both grieving and praying hard right now after an Island family was involved in a horrible car accident this weekend. Kevin Maras, 50, was killed in the crash, his wife, Heather suffered terrible injuries and their children are also hurt. I’m told Heather had surgery for a broken back and head injury. Sierra, 18, will undergo surgery to put pins in her leg and Ashley, 16, was released with minor injuries.
Heather has worked at Huth Road School for years and the family is beloved in the community.
The community is praying and asking everyone else to pray as well.
Here is what we know as NBC 5 reported: New York State Police said Rene Castonguay, 62, of Quebec, was driving west and Kevin Maras, 50, of Grand Island, New York, was driving an SUV in the opposite direction when they crashed head-on.
Police said both drivers were killed in the crash.
Troopers said Maras’ wife and two daughters were with him in the SUV and were injured.
Whitelaw said two of them were airlifted to the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington. The third was taken to Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.
Officials closed Route 86 between River Road and Fox Farm Road in the Town of North Elba due to the crash, rerouting drivers.
The roadway had reopened as of 4 p.m.
Essex County Office of Emergency Services Director Don Jaquish said initial calls for response came in just after 9 a.m.
He said the wreck occurred in the Lake Placid Fire District.
Police said crews from Wilmington, Jay and Lake Placid all responded.
Troopers said the crash remains under investigation.
It will be a long, difficult road for the Maras family. We will keep you updated once we know more. Please pray for this family. They will need all of us to surround them with love, light and strength right now.
