The Lion King musical is based on the 1994 Disney animated classic film of the same name. The music, by Elton John and lyrics by Tim Rice come to life in this amazing musical feature.
The show features actors in animal costumes, along with giant, hollow puppets bringing a unique blend of realism and fantasy. The musical has been playing for 20 years and is hte highest grossing musical of all time – surpassing $1 billion dollars.
The prancing giraffes, leaping antelopes, and roaring lions fill you with wonder and astonishment. The story is the same, a lion cub named Simba – growing up and taking over as King, protecting his land. It’s the animated movie come to life – the African chants and music, the dancing, and those shockingly gorgeous costumes – all work together to keep you at the edge of your seat the entire show.
The show runs 2 hours and 30 minutes (including intermission). It never drags, doesn’t lose your attention once.
I brought my 6-year-old, Emma and I wasn’t sure how she would do. She loved it. She hasn’t stopped talking about it since we went. Pumbaa the lovable warthog and Timon the hilarious meerkat were her favorites.
It’s a beautiful story, well told, but it’s also quite funny. The one-liners are hilarious and keep a smile on your face. The characters come into the audience and walk down the aisles throughout the show, almost making you feel like you are a part of it.
It’s still the sad story it always was, filled with life-lessons. But, it is so much more when seeing it brought to life. And seeing it in a fabulous venue like Shea’s Performance Arts Center makes it even more special.
Tickets are still available. For more information on ticket times, dates, and prices – head to sheas.org.
