Children all around the world are wishing for toys, crafts, books, clothes and musical instruments for Christmas. They’ll open them gleefully and play with them. It’s wonderful.

But for two young boys – it is the gift of color they will treasure most this holiday. Students at Royalton-Hartland Elementary School – along with teachers, parents, friends, and the school principal came together to do something quite amazing. They raised $1200 in just about a week and were able to purchase a pair of Enchoroma glasses for two students at the school. Those glasses allowed each of those boys to see color for the first time ever. Ever.

Take a moment to think about that gift.

It’s incredible. To see in color – something most of us take for granted – for the first time.

This Christmas the boys can see the green Christmas tree, the gold stars, the blue and yellow ornaments, Santa’s red suit – and all of the other beautiful colors of the season.

Billy Kusnierczak and Gavin lckowski were given the gift that truly will keep on giving. The 4th graders put the glasses on and the joy was contagious.

For Billy’s mom, Erin Kusnierczak – it’s a moment she will never forget. “There are no words to express how much this means to Billy and our family! We are so incredibly thankful and blessed to be a part of the most amazing community!!! I am still trying to wrap my head around it all. Our school, principal, teachers, staff, and our community, gave our son the the most incredible gift anyone could give! They gave him the ability to see the magic of Christmas! They have given him the ability to see Christmas like never before!”

It all happened so quickly. “Back in November a friend had posted a video of a little boy trying on the glasses for the first time and showing his experience in being able to see colors,” Erin said, “I commented on the post that I would LOVE to get these for Billy someday!! Casey, also a friend of mine saw my comment and never knew Billy was colorblind!” Casey Yaeger developed a plan and the school and community came together to raise the money to purchase the glasses for the boys.  They were given the gift with all of the fanfare deserved for such an amazing present. The town made it a big deal, too. The Gasport Fire Department and Middleport Police came to join in the celebration – with lights flashing. Those lights were the first thing the boys were able to see – in color after putting on their new glasses!

And – you can say things were taken to another level of color when the family went to Paul Crego’s Lockport home. The house is pretty famous for the unbelievable display of lights. So many colors. All new for Billy – who was in awe.

“We were so excited to take him out last night to see Christmas lights for the first time! He was completely mesmerized by the lights and all the colors! It was an experience we are so thankful for and one we will never ever forget!! We are looking forward to watching Billy discover the world in a new way, in color!!”

Sometimes – the gifts we give come from deep within our heart. Sometimes, those gifts mean more than we could ever know. This week – two little boys received a gift that will literally change the way they see things. A Christmas miracle.

“And that’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.”
