For Douglas DeWysocki, Jr., this is easily one of the most amazing weeks of his life. The 24-year-old is living out his dream, helping to make history, while being surrounded by it.
Douglas graduated from Niagara Wheatfield before heading to John Carroll University where he majored in political science and minored in American history. With his degree in hand, there was only one place he wanted to be – our Nation’s Capital. He interned for a Florida Congressman, and counted his blessings.
If you aren’t aware – interning at the Capitol is not a very glamorous job. It’s very long hours and low pay – but, what you learn and the people you meet – make it all worth it. He’s taken that experience and is running with it. Literally, actually.
This week, Douglas is working on the Inauguration. It doesn’t matter what you think of the President-elect – this is a moment for the history books and Douglas tells me he is beyond thrilled, “It’s truly an incredible experience. Being able to be a small part of the peaceful transition of power between Presidents is something that I’ll remember for the rest of my life. I’m just grateful to be here.”
With people pouring into D.C., Douglas is taking it all in, when he has a second to spare, “Right now the atmosphere is a little crazy. This will be my first inauguration in DC, and I can certainly say I’ve never seen anything like this. Everyone is getting ready for this. I can’t say much about my job, but I’m working on parade staff.”
For Douglas it’s been quite a few years and as much as he misses his family in Niagara Falls, he says he’s right where he is meant to be, “I love DC and I love being here. It’s been a great couple of years. Aside from the work I do, what I like the most about living here is the history that surrounds me. For some of us here, we spent most of our young lives studying and admiring the great men and women, who’ve made huge decisions in this city. For an American history lover like myself, being able to walk out of my apartment and see the US Capitol is what keeps me going especially on the longer days.”
