Jim Kelly was diagnosed with oral squamous-cell carcinoma in May 2013. He had been cancer-free since September 2014. A biopsy in February revealed the cancer has returned. Kelly issued a statement on March 1st, announcing the news,
“As our family has faced many trials and triumphs throughout the years, you have blessed us with your prayers. We are asking for those prayers once again.
The oral cancer we hoped would be gone forever has returned. Although I was shocked and deeply saddened to receive this news, I know that God is with me. I continuously talk about the four F’s. Faith, Family, Friends and Fans. With all of you by my side, we will fight and win this battle together. Staying “Kelly Tough” and trusting God, will carry us through this difficult time.”
Now, the beloved sports icon is set to go under the knife on Wednesday. Kelly will have what he calls, “major surgery” in New York City. Doctors will not only remove the cancer, but also reconstruct much of Kelly’s upper jaw which he has revealed has caused him massive amounts of pain every day.
Kelly hopes that his quality of life will greatly improve followed the reconstruction surgery.
Kelly is just back from a family vacation to Arizona. He posted this picture on his Facebook page – calling himself a “very blessed man.”
One thing is certain, Jim Kelly has an entire community praying, supporting, and rallying around him. #kellytough
Good luck in NYC tomorrow, Jim.
