The man many of us watched report the news every night for decades – has died.

WKBW-TV is reporting that Buffalo media legend, Irv Weinstein passed away.

The broadcasting icon lost his battle with ALS in California on Tuesday.

Irv Weinstein had a legendary career in the Queen City.

He was inducted into the Buffalo Broadcasters Hall of Fame is 1988. He worked in broadcasting for over half a century – starting his career in radio when he was a high school student.

Irv Weinstein was the person we all believed, trusted and counted on to tell us what was happening in our community. He teamed up with Rick Azar and Tom Jolls in 1965, taking WKBW, Eyewitness News from number 3 to number 1. He retired in 1998.

When I was a college student, I had to spend the day with, interview, and write a report about a person in the news. Of course I picked Irv Weinstein. He was a legend. He was a powerhouse. He was a true journalist. He was what I wanted to be.

I was intimidated, but the truth is, Irv could not have been kinder. He was incredibly nice and his passion for his career was very obvious. He will truly be missed.

“It’s 11 o’clock, do you know where your children are?”

The broadcasting legend is survived by his wife, Elaine and their three children. Irv Weinstein was 87-years-old.

Welcome to Totally Buffalo! A local lifestyle website.

My name is Mary Friona-Celani and I am the creator of this site! I’m a wife, a mom, a grandma, a Buffalo booster, an entrepreneur and a small business owner. I’m so glad you stopped by.  After 20 years in the buffalo media, I went out on my own to tell stories about the people, places, events and all-around fabulousness of this wonderful place we call home. Buffalo is different and so is this site. We are here to share stories, encourage kindness, and help make this a better place to live.

We’ll help those in need when we can through our charity arm, Totally Buffalo Cares.

We help local small businesses, artisans and vendors though our events and our Totally Buffalo Stores.

We’ll do all of this with a little help from friends in our community.
