On Feb 5, 2018, the Erie County Health Department was notified of a positive case of Hepatitis A in a food service worker.
Now, because the person worked in food service, there is a low but still serious possibility of Hepatitis-A transmission for those who ate food prepared by this person. The Hepatitis-A infected patient worked in food-service at two locations – Brookdale Living Solutions Assisted Living Facility on Main Street in Williamsville and Al-e-oops Restaurant on Genesee Street in Lancaster.
As a precautionary measure, Erie County will be providing prophylactic vaccine to individuals who may have been exposed and who will benefit from the vaccination. The vaccine will be offered at two locations. Brookdale for individuals who ate food between 1/23 and 1/31. For Al-e-oops tomorrow at Bownamsville Fire Hall from 3 to 8 p.m. for people who ate food from 1/27-30.
Residents, visitors and staff at Brookdale should contact the facility for more information about whether they should receive Hepatitis A vaccination.
Although the risk of infection is low, this should be taken very seriously.
What to watch for: tiredness, poor appetite, nausea and vomiting, fever, dark-colored urine, yellowing of the eyes and skin. If you develop these symptoms, call 858-2929.
