If you’ve never heard of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, you’re not alone. As an American of Italian descent, I hadn’t either. Until my best friend joined and filled me in.
Turns out, it is a sisterhood of sorts.
A sisterhood of Irish and Irish-American, Catholic Women who work to help make their community a better place to live.
It started in 1894, and the ladies have been making a difference ever since.
In Niagara Falls, the group is 80 members strong. 80 ladies who work hard giving back.
Their motto is “Friendship, Unity, and Christian Charity”. The primary purpose of the Ladies AOH was to protect young immigrant Irish girls coming to the United States, to assist them in securing employment, to give them the opportunity to be with their own kind, and to keep them from becoming homesick and discouraged. Now, it’s to help those in need – whoever they may be.
The Ladies will be hosting a traditional Irish Breakfast on Sunday, March 1st from 9 a.m. to noon at St. Leo’s Worship Site, 2748 Military Road, Niagara Falls. Tickets are $10 (10 & under, $6). Last year, 500 people enjoyed the breakfast!
Proceeds from the breakfast go to charities, including – Lord’s Day Dinner, Catholic Charities, Magdalene Project, St. Joseph Outreach, Summit Life Outreach, Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center.
If you would like to make a basket or monetary donation to help defray food costs, you can go to the LAOH Facebook Page.Â
