If you love a good party and a great cause – you’re in luck! Laura Whittinghill has been planning this event for the past year. It’s a huge bash with one mission – to raise money in hopes to someday find a cure for Alzheimer’s Disease. A monster of a disease that does not discriminate. It captures our loved ones, holding them hostage. It takes their memories, but never their spirit. It’s a terrible way to spend what are supposed to be your Golden Years.
Eddie Fitz for Alzheimer’s Awareness Fundraiser is set for July 22 from 5 to 9 p.m. (more details below)
More than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s Disease right now. It is a devastating illness that takes a great deal away from the patient, and their family.
It’s a monster of a disease, as Laura Whittinghill knows all too well.
Anyone who know’s Laura knows that she loves her family, sunsets over Lake Erie, and working hard to fight the awful disease that takes away so much from our loved ones.
Laura watched as Alzheimer’s Disease brutalized her family. When her dad was diagnosed, she started researching the symptoms, behavioral changes, stages and basically every other aspect of the disease. She knew that she had to do something, anything – to help. She decided to create an annual event to raise money and awareness – and over the past seven years, ‘The Eddie Fitz Fundraiser’ has raised more than $10,000. She said it’s just her part, “No family should ever have to endure this long, painful and heart wrenching goodbye of a loved one. My dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2006, and after a long and painful journey, he was called “home” on July 2, 2015.”
It was that long painful journey that started her on this new amazing journey. So, the volunteers don their Superman shirts – an homage to Laura’s dad, who she says was the ultimate man of steel.
Paul Moore served in the Korean War. He was a mechanical engineer who loved his job, his family, and his Country. He is one of the millions of American’s who’ve received the devastating diagnosis. For Laura, the Eddie Fitz (named after The SS Edmund Fitzgerald, which was an American Great Lakes freighter that sank in a Lake Superior storm on November 10, 1975, losing the entire crew of 29) is a labor of love – one that she will continue holding every year.
Thank you Laura – for reminding us that we can all do something to make a difference.
