It all happened in just minutes. Around 2:30 on a Tuesday morning, firefighters were called out to the Hamburg home of the Neureuter Family. Flams ripped through, engulfing the home. After hearing the smoke detectors going off, the family managed to get to safety by jumping out a second story window.
After two hours, the fire was contained but the entire home was destroyed. Along with losing all of their belongings, the family also lost their precious dog, Nellie.
Susan Neureuter, an Orchard Park teacher, injured her back while jumping out the window and has a fractured disk. The rest of the family, while emotionally devastated, are physically okay.
Colleen Folan Schoch is Susan Neureuter’s sister. She tells me the family is incredibly grateful for the community support, ” Our family has always said what we love about living in WNY is how wonderful this community is. Both Susan and Jeff have been there for anyone with a need and now they are experiencing that support being offered to them!”
Colleen says the family would likely have perished in the fire if they did not have working smoke detectors in the home. They are urging everyone to check their smoke detectors and be sure they are working.
A GOFUNDME account has been started to help the family during this difficult time. Donations and gift cards are also being collected at Hamburg Village office.
This family lost everything. Please help if you can.
Hamburg Police say an Eden man has been charged after being found with items that were inside the burning home.
