Zittel’s Fall Tradition Brings Out Families in Hamburg

Spread the love

These days, finding a family-owned company that’s been in business for 120 years and 5 generations is tough to do.  It’s a rarity not only in Western New York, but also across the country.

That’s why Zittel’s Country Market in Hamburg is so unique and as trees in our area start to change color and the temperatures start to cool down, this fall season is the perfect time to check out Zittel’s!

The Zittel’s family business started when George Zittel left his father’s dairy farm and purchased land in Eden Valley in 1897.  George sold the farm to his son Amos in 1934, and Amos then sold it to his son’s George and Paul in 1964.  George, 81 and Paul, 76 still come out to the farm every day to help at the family’s business.  Terry Zittel said it continues to be a business that incorporates multiple generations.  “Bill, David and Kevin, the fourth generation and Evan the fifth generation all work together to grow and harvest 400 acres of fresh market vegetables, 3 acres of greenhouse and run the retail market.”

Zittel says the history are very important and they are all proud to be able to pass it on to future generations.  “The future of any family business lies in the ability to transfer knowledge and experiences to the next generation to assure continued success and have the older generations become mentors.”

Fall is the perfect time to check out the big red barn on Southwestern Boulevard in Hamburg.   “For over 33 years we have celebrated the start of Fall with pumpkins, corn stalks, mums and apples but our emphasis has always been to provide free family fun and a place to bring young ones to enjoy our straw maze, baby animals, pumpkin head characters, corn box  and pick out their special pumpkin to carve.”  There’s so much to enjoy for all ages and Zittel’s has everything open to the public on weekends from September 21 through Halloween.  The Fall Festival will take place on Saturday, September 21 and will feature crafts and a bounce house in addition to their free family fun.  Pony rides will also be offered at the festival.

All aboard!  For the fifth straight year, Zittel’s will be offering their scenic train rides on September 28 and 29.  They offer  folks “a chance to take a step back in time and ride the rails on authentic restored rail cars. Train enthusiasts young and old love to ride the rails!”

Tickets for the train rides and more information on everything at Zittel’s can be found on Zittels.com.
