As a teenager – there was nothing like getting all dressed up for the prom. But, you wanna know what’s even better? Being a mom – and helping my girls pick out a dress, shoes, and everything else that made them a princess. It was such an amazing time for all of us, as first Alexa and then Maria headed off to the prom. Junior. Senior. So lovely. So, so lovely. (Yes, I know it’ll be Emma and Ella before too long)
I also know how much the dresses, shoes, and everything else can cost. It’s a lot of money,
These dresses are usually worn just once, which – lets face it – is a waste of money. So, why not donate them and let another young lady – who may not have the money to spend – enjoy her prom and feel like a princess.
Legislator Lynne Dixon & Urban Valet Cleaners started a Prom Dress Drive to help young women have the opportunity they deserve. The 8th annual drive is underway and they are accepting donations until April 13th. It’s a wonderful idea and not at all shocking that someone as sweet and caring as Legislator Lynne Dixon – would spearhead the effort. I know from working with her for more than a decade, that Lynne is the real deal – who cares an awful lot about this community.
By donating a dress, you are giving a young girl the opportunity she may not otherwise have had. She will feel like a princess. Legislator Dixon says the event is special because the dresses are, “The prom dress drive is a great way for girls to find a gorgeous dress free. It not only helps reduce the cost of prom, but it is also a great way to re-use and recycle beautiful gowns that truly have had only a couple of hours of wear. I would encourage girls to come and shop. There is such a variety and selection to choose from.”
Gently used gowns can be donated at these locations:
Blasdell Village Hall, Boston Free Library, Dudley Branch Library, Eden Boys & Girls Club, Hamburg Village Hall, Hamburg Library, Lackawanna Library, lake Shore Library, Old County Hall, State Farm Insurance (6778 Erie Rd, Derby) Urban Valet Cleaners (630 Elmwood, Buffalo – 106 Evans St, Hamburg – 4081 N. Buffalo Road, OP)
Once the gowns are collected, it’s time to shop!
If you need a dress, you can shop for two days at the GOWN GIVEAWAY: Town Hall Plaza in Hamburg, 6000 South Park Avenue, Suite 200 – Saturday, April 29 from 12-3 p.m. and Sunday April 30 from 2 – 5 p.m.
