It’s been a long time coming – but it’s finally here and up and running!

The fully restored Buffalo Heritage Carousel, a vintage, park-style, menagerie carousel, custom designed and manufactured in 1924 by Spillman Engineering in North Tonawanda for Domenick De Angelis, has returned to Buffalo. The ride is enclosed in a landmark building, giving it a stunning home for this historic and rare carousel that is powered by the sun.

The solar-powered Buffalo Heritage Carousel celebrates the history of carousel manufacturing in Western New York and our legacy of leadership in the use of renewable energy that began in 1901 with the transmission of hydro-electric power from Niagara Falls to Buffalo.

The vintage carousel, with its 34 menagerie animals rising up and down as carnival music plays,  sat in storage for 63 years before arriving at Canalside!

The project cost $6.1 million.

The rare three-row, park-style carousel was manufactured in North Tonawanda.

The merry-go-round has a herd of 27 horses, plus a deer, lion, tiger, giraffe, ostrich, mule and “lake monster. The colorful details on the pieces are stunning!

There is a 6,400-square-foot pavilion with tall windows and 13-foot walkway around the inside of the roundhouse, and a wheelchair-accessible entrance. The coated windows will block 95% of the sun’s UV rays to help preserve the menagerie.

The carousel will operate, with Covid-19 cleaning protocols in place, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily until Sept. 6, when it will switch to Fridays through Sundays.

About Me

Welcome to Totally Buffalo! A local lifestyle website.

My name is Mary Friona-Celani and I am the creator of this site! I’m a wife, a mom, a grandma, a Buffalo booster, an entrepreneur and a small business owner. I’m so glad you stopped by.  After 20 years in the buffalo media, I went out on my own to tell stories about the people, places, events and all-around fabulousness of this wonderful place we call home. Buffalo is different and so is this site. We are here to share stories, encourage kindness, and help make this a better place to live.

We’ll help those in need when we can through our charity arm, Totally Buffalo Cares.

We help local small businesses, artisans and vendors though our events and our Totally Buffalo Stores.

We’ll do all of this with a little help from friends in our community.
