Another example of New York State Troopers going above and beyond the call of duty. These amazing, generous and super cool Troopers showed their big hearts on a big shopping trip!
Ten-year-old Gavin Burns was severely injured in a lawnmower accident at his Lewiston home back on June 1st. He’s had six major surgeries, including the amputation of his left foot and part of his leg.
He’s tough, though. So tough.
Yes, there are difficult days – how could there not be.
But, he’s been having an amazing summer with his brothers and parents, too. Gavin has gone camping and swimming – even on a zipline!
Now, as summer comes to an end, Gavin has been a bit worried about going back to school. 5th grade is tough enough, but going back to class after all he’s been through will have some all new challenges for Gavin. He was telling his mom that he really just wants to walk into school.
It’s been difficult – but suddenly something made it better. Three New York State Troopers took Gavin on a back-to-school shopping spree! Troopers Steve Ferguson, Jeff Bebak and Sergio Cruz were Gavin’s personal shoppers today – and hey, they all have great taste! Funds for the shopping trip were provided by members of State Police Niagara and WNY Troopers for Troops.
Gavin’s mom, Jackie Burns posted on Facebook, “Well today was an amazing surprise for Gavin! He keeps saying if he can’t walk into school he’s not going ? But this managed to get his mind changed ❤️The New York State Police donated money to take Gavin shopping! He had an amazing time and we are forever grateful for your support and love.”
She also told me via text that Gavin had a ball.
There is something really special about this shopping trip! Something so sweet about these Troopers taking time out of their day to help a little boy they’ve never met, to show they care.
Their timing was impeccable! It was a much-needed pick-me-up for a very special little boy.
We hope Gavin has an amazing year and we thank Troopers Ferguson, Bebak and Cruz for their kindness, compassion and service.
