It seems like most of us have a personal reason to hate cancer.
It seems like most of us know someone who has battled cancer.
For Steven Popovich, that person is his daughter, Jennifer.
Jennifer was diagnosed with a brain tumor when she was 8 1/2 months pregnant, “Throughout her pregnancy she was sick and early on it was thought to be morning sickness,” Steven recalls, “As her pregnancy progressed, her illness continued to worsen and, unfortunately she continued to be misdiagnosed. Her legs started to give out on her with no warning which led us to Children’s Hospital. They did several tests and found out that she had a brain tumor twice the size of a golf ball. Her situation was so bad at that point that we weren’t sure she would make it through the night. Dr. Li and his team worked very hard and diligently to get her stable and performed the first of 4 brain operations the following morning. Two hours after the surgery, our grandson”s heartbeat started to drop and they took Jennifer back in to surgery and performed a c-section.”
Baby Sincere was born happy and healthy. Jennifer went on to fight – with 4 operations, chemotherapy, radiation, and a huge array of other medications and treatments. Today – she is a 12-year survivor!!
Her family doesn’t take that for granted which is why they work each year to raise money for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Lockport. The folks known as Jennifer’s Angels work hard on a variety of fundraisers throughout the year including their big one, Golf Against Cancer. The event is coming up in just a few weeks. You can take part in the tournament, have dinner, or make a donation to this wonderful cause.
Because, as Steven puts it so eloquently, “Together, we can help make sure that cancer never steals another year of anyone’s life. Our strength and commitment fuels the movement’s growth, honors those that have been affected by cancer, and reminds us all how special one more candle, one more cake and one more celebration with the people we truly love is.”
