Local dental group offering free oral cancer screenings in honor of their patient, Jim Kelly

Share

April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, and Westermeier Martin Dental Care is marking the occasion by helping others.

They’re offering free screenings for oral cancer for one day only as a tribute to Jim Kelly, who remains hospitalized following surgery to remove his cancer and reconstruct his jaw.

Jim Kelly is a patient at Westermeier Martin. So, in his name, they will offer the free screenings at their Amherst and East Aurora offices from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 12.

Yes. The 12th.

A significant day for sure considering Jim Kelly wore number 12 during his 11 seasons with the Buffalo Bills.

According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, nearly 50,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. Still, dental professionals say awareness of the disease remains low.

“Many people falsely believe that oral cancer is only associated with smoking and tobacco use. Jim Kelly is a perfect example of the fact that this disease can strike even the healthiest individuals,” Dr. Scott Westermeier, co-founder of Westermeier Martin Dental, said. “We stand with our friend Mr. Kelly in his battle against oral cancer and hope that his story will motivate patients to get screened, as early detection is critical.”

Screenings will be held at the East Aurora office, located at 950 Main Street and the Amherst office, located at 3500 Sheridan Drive. Patients will be seen on a walk-in basis; no appointment is necessary.
