Events, Good Neighbor, News
Looking to spread a little love this Valentine's Day? How about empowering the women of Hope Gardens? A couple of giving ladies are making it very easy for you - for us - to do so! Two friends are getting together, to raise money, and awareness for a great cause by holding a Galentine's Day celebration. Galentine's Day is the Valentine's Day alternative that celebrates female friendship. Stephanie Perry and Rebecca Decker hope to make self-care goody bags for 20 women who have overcome homelessness and now live at Hope Gardens in Buffalo. Inside each bag - will be skincare, toiletry and personal relaxation items that the housing may not already have - but that everyone enjoys. How awesome is that! They are looking for financial sponsors and donations of self-care…

Little Buffalo boy with 24 hours to live – gets life saving organ from his aunt

Good Neighbor, News
UPDATE: Aiden's white blood cell count is low - he's back in for blood work. The family is asking for prayers.    It's hard to imagine your child so sick, he's given 24 hours to live. That is what happened to Janel Little from Buffalo and her baby boy, Aiden. It was a few months ago, on Thanksgiving - sweet little 18-month-old Aiden became very sick and was taken to Women & Children's Hospital. Doctors found his liver was failing.  Aiden and his mother were airlifted to Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. The baby boy was put on life support and was added to a donor list. Doctors told Janel that her baby had mere hours to live. But, miracles happen. And did that day. Aiden's aunt, Josephine…

Buffalonians win chili cook-off in South Florida – headed to finals in Vegas!

Buffalonians win chili cook-off in South Florida – headed to finals in Vegas!

Good Neighbor, News
For Mark Fish - it's been a ten-year wait. Ten years of chopping, slicing, mixing and hoping - but that chili cook-off trophy has eluded the North Buffalo resident for a full decade. But, it seems persistence has paid off! Mark, his girlfriend, Jamie (who happens to be my niece)  and their crew of friends from Florida finally found the holy grail. The number one. The trophy. The bragging rights. You guys, this is no joke. The contest - put on by the International Chili Society (yes, there is such a thing) is a big deal. Every year hundreds of ICS sanctioned cookoffs take place. This one - held in Miami - had over 150 entries. But, the Buffalo folks and their team are on a hot streak. They took…

26 Shirts helps families during their darkest time

26 Shirts helps families during their darkest time

Good Neighbor, News
The concept is pretty simple. A new shirt - every two weeks. Each one with pretty cool artwork. Each one to benefit a different person. The are all different - but, they are all the same, too. They all help a family in need. For Del Reid, who has now spread the 26 shirts love to Chicago, Cincinnati, and Pittsburgh -  it's about doing the right thing. They've raised a mind-boggling $336,888 so far. From t-shirts. Amazing! Del tells me they can't do it alone, "Without contributing artists, sponsors, and of course customers, this idea goes nowhere." The latest shirt is going to help sweet baby Anastasia. The 8-month-old is fighting an inoperable brain tumor.  In spite of all of the tests and procedures Ana has endured,  there are multiple tests…

Update: Ginny's mom, Michele Lloyd tells me it was wonderful, "There was an amazing turnout!! Ginny felt good enough to stay til 9 p.m. Perfect! The weather had me worried, but it didn't stop anyone." That is certainly not surprising - this is the City of Good Neighbors. Please continue to help Ginny - by donating to her fundraising page (at the bottom of this story) If you've ever thought to yourself - life isn't fair - think about this. Ginny Fagard is 14 and she is battling brain cancer. She already beat leukemia ten years ago - yet, now - she's dealt this hand. Again. And she's fighting. She's has multiple brain surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation, and way too many procedures to name. And she's fighting. That is not fair.…

'Spirit of Children' - a program partnered with Spirit Halloween - presented a grant for $42,136 to the Child Life Department and patients at Women & Children's Hospital. The presentation wraps up a year of fundraising by the store which sells Halloween costumes and accessories. This is a big deal for those sweet little patients. But, it gets even better. Spirit of Children has raised over $219,000 for the Child Life Department over the years and as they get ready to make their huge move to the new Oishei Children's Hospital - that money will make a huge difference - according to McKenzie Mattison, Manager of Volunteer and Family Services at Women and Children's Hospital of Buffalo, "The support of the Spirit of Children has made it possible for Women…

93-year-old ‘Mrs. Claus’ has one thing left on her bucket list. Any guesses?

93-year-old ‘Mrs. Claus’ has one thing left on her bucket list. Any guesses?

Good Neighbor
It's really quite amazing. Rosaria Cronwell has been playing Mrs. Claus at a community Christmas party in Niagara Falls for years. She missed one year after being in a car accident, and you bet the kids noticed. She says it's something she does because it brings her just as much joy as it brings the children,  "Just looking at those cute little faces getting ready to speak to Santa. Some of them won't go to Santa, but they will come to me." Why wouldn't they. Such a sweet, peaceful lady. And would you believe, Rosaria is 93 years old? I know, she looks amazing. She was born on September 7, 1923. She's been around for 17 presidents and countless historical events - World War 2, the great depression, President Kennedy's assassination,…
