Family and friends are planning a benefit to help Gene’s family with the mounting medical expenses his illness has created. The family will be traveling to Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital for a transplant. Please help if you can. Here are the details.

WHEN: Sunday, July 30 from 2 to 6 p.m.

WHERE: Frontier Volunteer Fire Company, 2176 Liberty Drive, Niagara Falls.

WHAT: Great food, basket raffle, 50/50, entertainment.

Six-year-old Gene Hilson III was a little under the weather so his mom took him to his pediatrician. His lungs sounded clear. He was negative for strep. He was sent home. But the little boy kept complaining of a headache. No appetite. Lethargic. Not himself.

A week later, still feeling sick, they were back at the pediatrician, who prescribed antibiotics. Gene’s mom, Angela – who is a nurse – asked for a urinalysis.

Thank goodness.

There was the answer. Poor little Gene was sent to Women & Children’s Hospital where he was diagnosed with kidney failure. Seemingly out of nowhere; Gene went from healthy to incredibly sick. A kidney biopsy showed End Stage Renal Disease. Gene needs a kidney transplant – until then he will continue dialysis treatments.

Angela says her little guy is one tough cookie, “Gene is very positive and despite being anemic, he has a ton of energy. He knows he is sick but doesn’t fully understand just how sick.”

Angela is doing everything she can to be strong, “I have to stay positive for him. It’s very difficult to take care or see your own child sick. It’s something I’ve never ever thought I would deal with.”

But, she is. And step number one is testing to see if she can be a donor. She just found out they are the same blood type, now further testing will determine if her kidney would be a match as well. If not, other family members will be tested as well.

We are sending loads of luck and prayers to Gene, Angela and their entire family.

Family members have started a gofundme fundraising page to help with medical and living expenses during this time. The family will travel to Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital for the transplant.
